ProductFairness Engine

Make workload visible. Keep duties balanced.

The Fairness Engine compares physician workload across hours, duties, nights and weekends before the roster is published, and keeps that balance across months.

PlanMyRounds duty plan with the Workload view

What fair means in a physician roster

Equal total hours, nights and weekends shared evenly, no clustering of hard shifts, and balance carried from one roster to the next. Every one of these is applied only after every safety and coverage rule is met.

Compare the workload at a glance

Workload reports show each doctor's totals for any period, so fairness can be checked instead of argued about. Reports export to PDF, CSV or Excel.

Balance the roster without losing coverage

Coverage, approved leave and rest are hard rules and always met. Hours and nights are then spread as evenly as those rules allow.

  • Nights divided by count, not by feel
  • High-burden shifts spaced out
  • Preferences applied to every doctor

Track fairness across rosters

One roster can only be so even: with 30 nights and 8 doctors, someone does an extra night. PlanMyRounds uses past rosters so the extra night rotates instead of landing on the same people.

How to split night shifts fairly

Divide the period's nights by the doctors eligible for nights after approved leave, so no two counts differ by more than one. Space each doctor's nights apart, protect the recovery window after every night, and give fewer nights next period to anyone who did an extra one.

For example, 30 single-doctor nights shared by 8 doctors means six doctors do 4 nights and two do 3. See a full monthly ICU example

Fair scheduling FAQ

How do you create a fair doctor schedule?
Meet every coverage, leave and rest rule first. Then balance total hours, divide nights and other high-burden shifts evenly by count, space those shifts out so they do not cluster, and carry any imbalance into the next roster. PlanMyRounds applies all of these automatically and reports hours, shift counts and night load per doctor.
How should night shifts be split between doctors?
Divide the period's night shifts by the number of doctors eligible for nights, after approved leave, so each doctor's count differs by at most one. Space each doctor's nights apart, protect the recovery window after each one, and give fewer nights next period to anyone who did an extra one this period.
Does fairness ever override coverage or rest rules?
No. In PlanMyRounds, coverage, approved leave and rest are hard constraints that are always met. Fairness and preferences are soft constraints optimized within them.
What if a doctor wants more nights?
Preferences are soft constraints. PlanMyRounds honors a preference for more or fewer nights where it can without breaking a hard rule, and keeps the rest of the team's load balanced.
Can the team see that the roster is fair?
Yes. Rosters are visible to the whole team, and workload reports show each doctor's total hours, shift counts and night-shift load, exportable to PDF, CSV or Excel.
