# A doctor can't request a swap

> Check roster status, sign-in, and rule conflicts when a doctor can't start or complete a duty swap.

    Swaps only work on a **Published** roster. Draft rosters can't be swapped on. See [How duty swaps work](/docs/swaps/overview#when-can-a-doctor-swap).

  <Step title="Is the doctor signed in?">
    A doctor viewing a public share link has to sign in to their PlanMyRounds account before they can start a swap.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Are there any eligible partners?">
    PlanMyRounds only shows colleagues who are available and eligible. If the panel shows no options, the two most common reasons are: every other doctor already has a duty on those dates, or the swap would break a [rest rule](/docs/rosters/roster-constraints) such as minimum rest hours between shifts.

  <Step title="Did the roster change while they were choosing?">
    Swaps are re-validated at the moment of confirmation, not just when the options first load. If an admin edited the roster in the meantime, the doctor may need to refresh and try again. See [Requesting a swap](/docs/swaps/requesting-a-swap#confirm).
